Educational Institutions

There are a number of Jewish Educational institutions in Vienna. Zvi Perez Chajes School is the Jewish school of Vienna and is run by the community. It reopened in 1984 after being closed for more than 50 years. In 1986 the Ronald S. Lauder-Foundation established the Bet-Chabad-Schule. Approximately 400 students receive Jewish religious instruction in general schools and two additional Talmud Torah schools. The ultra-Orthodox community has its own educational system and separate schools. Various other educational institutions have developed in recent decades. In February 2004, The Viennese Yeshiva, the first yeshiva built since World War II was inaugurated.

Zvi Perez Chajes School
Realgymnasium, Volksschule, Kindergarten der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Wien
Castellazgasse 35
1020 Vienna

Founded as a "Jewish Private Gymnasium" and named after Chief Rabbi Zvi Perez Chajes in 1919, it was mainly attended by pupils with a Galician background (a former province of Austria-Hungary Monarchy, today Galicia is split between Ukraine and Poland). Modeled on the principles of its name-giver, the school tried to harmonize assimilation and orthodoxy. Leaning towards Zionism, it strived to combine Jewish Nationalism with a humanistic education; a Jewish cultural identity matched with loyalty to society. The school was closed down in 1941, after it was used by the Gestapo to assemble Viennese Jews prior to their deportation. It was reopened in Castellezgasse in September 1984. About 80 children attend pre-school and Kindergarten, 140 primary school and about 140 the "Gymnasium". Hebrew is taught as the first foreign language.
