Jews lived throughout the 14th century in Murau. They had a synagogue and probably used the cemetery of Friesach. The important money trader Haeslein (Hoeschlein) of Friesach lived here (1347-1350) and was the head of a large family. He was granted a letter of protection, mentioning his legal status as being the same as the “Jews in Murau have enjoyed for ages.” A certain Merklein, together with Jews from Villach and Judenburg, gave a loan to the monastery Admont. There was a Judenrichter (Judge of the Jews). The last reliable source mentioning Jewish presence in Murau dates from 1405.
