The Jewish community of Moedling was established in the second half of the 19th century, and was the 3rd largest Jewish community in Lower Austria. It was officially founded in 1892 and included the districts of Moedling, Liesing, Bruck an der Leitha, Schwechat and Hainburg.
In 1932, there were 1,264 Jewish inhabitants in Moedling. The community maintained several communal institutions: a synagogue, and prayer houses in Liesing and in Bruck an der Leitha. There were also cultural, and women’s organizations: Chevra kaddisha (burial society), and Frauenwohltätigkeitsverein in Moedling and Liesing.
Among the rabbis of the community were Dr. Leo Bardowicz, who served until 1925, and Dr. Albert Schweiger, until 1938.
