Jews living in Marchegg were expelled in 1421. In 1496 Maximilian I, King of Germany and Duke of Austria allowed some of the Jews expelled from Styria, Carinthia, Wr. Neustadt and Neunkirchen to settle in Marchegg. The town governors were instructed to allow them to enter the town and permit them to rent Christian houses, allowing them to trade, as well as selling them ground for building Jewish houses. They were also instructed to protect the Jews and collect their taxes. These Jews were mainly activec as moneylenders and traders.
