In 1284 the Jews of Hallein and Mühldorf paid a tax of 20 Marks in silver to the Archbishop of Salzburg. The “Judenbad” (mikve – Jewish ritual bath) was located next to the Salzach, opposite of town, and the synagogue was close to the town hall. The synagogue was destroyed in 1404. Toward the end of the 15th century three heads of household lived in Hallein, two men and a widow, who lived as pawnbrokers. When the Jews of Salzburg were accused of host desecration, the Jews of Hallein were also persecuted and their synagogue was destroyed. In 1498 the Jews were expelled from the territory of Salzburg.
