Jews from Vienna seem to have settled in Hainburg at the beginning of the 14th century. In 1320 Schondel of Hainburg owned two houses in Vienna, one of them being the slaughterhouse. Hainburg has several medieval monuments: the synagogue tower (Wiener Strasse 9) may have been the court of the aisle of the synagogue at house Nr. 18, the “Judenbad” (mikve – Jewish ritual bath) at Wiener Strasse 9 and 24 and Hauergasse 31 and 35 and two fragments of tombstones. Until 1368 Jews who were expelled from Pressburg lived here. In the 1420 expulsion, some of Hainburg’s Jews moved to Pressburg (Bratislava).
