During 1362 and 1400, five Jewish families lived in Enns. They resided, among others, in the “Judenstrazz” (today Kaltenbrunnergasse) between the city wall and the market. They were active as moneylenders and estate agents. Some years before the persecutions of the “Vienna Gezera”(1420/21), Isserlein bar Shalom and his wife were accused of buying a consecrated host and selling it to other Jews. This accusation led to the expulsion of the Jews from Enns, and eventually to the events of the “Vienna Gezera” and the expulsion of the Jews from Austria.
